Sustainability

Feeding your soul in ways that make sense and feels good.

I grew up in a strict religious environment. Church was a priority twice on Sunday, if you missed one of the servieces, the pastor would reach out to find out why you didn’t make it to both services. It wasn’t an option pick one or the other, the expectation was to show up to both sessions. The holier than thou, the judgement and the deception behind the scenes, left a lasting impression on me. Organized religion was not to be trusted.

Connecting with a higher power, connecting with nature all the culturaly accepted words was where I was at in my 20’s and 30’s.

I believed in God, it wasn’t him I didn’t trust, it was the church hiarchy that broke my spirit.

I believed that I could sustain a relationship with God as I knew him through gratitude and conversation.

I learned that spirituality was not limited to organized religion. The things that fed my soul came mostly from nature. If you have ever went fishing then you know you are quiet and taking in the scenery, deep philisophical thoughts flow. A camp fire crackling in a star lit night staring deeply into the flames where you see your spirit come alive. Feeling the spray of a waterfall on your face as fresh as the day you recieved annoiting you on your baptismal day.

But spirituality also comes from community. Your people, the ones you truly can be yourself around. Those that are ready to call you out on the things you are doing in your life that might not be beneficial to you. The ones you can laugh with and hold the inside jokes. The ones that are there when you need help or encouragement.

Spirituality is also enlightened through music and poetry. The messages of artists that have crept in your soul, those deep ones that you can access any time you need. That song that plays over and over almost as if it is your current theme song.

All of these mediums touching your soul creating a deeper meaning in your life.

Nurturing the family, the pets or plants they are all part of the spiritual life.

A return to the “church” eventually came about. Witnessing the love of the holy trinity- understanding them as individuals and three in one. But this time church is on my terms. I attend seeking a message that i can use through out the week. I attend for the sense of community and caring for others. I attend for the deeper relationship with God that I can find rich in tradition and those quiet moments before and after mass.

Wherever you are in your own journey make it sustainable. Keep your mind and heart open to the holy spirit guiding you to exactly the next place your belong.
